Neon Postcards

A late-night synth-pop single about missing someone in a city that never sleeps. Written across two cities, finished in one nine-hour studio day.

Two creatives working together under colourful studio light

The Brief

Two cities, one chorus

The artist sent a 40-second voice memo: a verse melody hummed over traffic noise, recorded on a fire escape. The ask was simple — keep the restlessness, give it a chorus big enough to sing with the windows down.

The Approach

Write fast, edit slow

We traded verses by phone for a week, then booked a single studio day. Drums and synths were tracked live to keep the nerves in the take, and the final chorus lyric was rewritten twenty minutes before the vocal session.

Process

How the day ran

  1. Morning — structureLocked the arrangement on acoustic guitar before touching a single synth, so the song worked naked first.
  2. Afternoon — trackingLive drums, stacked Juno pads, and three full vocal passes. The second pass made the record.
  3. Evening — the rewriteThe bridge wasn't earning its place, so we cut it and wrote the now-signature post-chorus chant on the studio floor.
